This is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring Financial Controller, potentially seeking a first move into industry, and for someone who is keen to learn & develop. You’ll receive guidance and mentoring from our Financial Controller and support him in performing technical accounting assessments, accounting for capital projects, preparing management and statutory accounts and work with the business to perform forecasting & investment appraisals to support decision making (both in terms of cashflow and specific projects).

The role is a key part of the finance team, supporting the Financial Controller and other parts of the business, with a focus on accounting for the capital assets and projects underpinning the Core Valleys Lines to be transferred to TfW and subsequent investment.
Role responsibilities

With support from the Financial Controller and other external advisors, you’ll provide appropriate accounting for the acquisition and treatment of fixed assets and other capital investment schemes. This includes accounting for revaluation, impairment and disposal of fixed assets in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

With Transport for Wales undertaking the Core Valley Lines asset transfer, you’ll support the project by contributing to the acquisition process and embedding the new assets within the Finance system (Microsoft Dynamics), as well as leading the accounting for the capital transformation spend on these assets following the transfer.

You’ll also need to support the Financial Controller to interpret and apply new accounting standards and consider accounting impact of significant transactions. Also, acting up in absence of the Financial Controller when necessary.

Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who is an aspiring Financial Controller, who is technically astute and can support the team in ensuring the appropriate accounting is undertaken for our high-profile projects.

You’ll need to:

  • Be a aualified Accountant, with an accreditation such as; ACA, ACCA, CIPFA, or similar.
  • Possess the ability to interpret and consider implications of a new accounting standard, and accounting implications of a new project (e.g. large capital acquisition) 
  • Have the technical expertise in accounting for fixed assets under IFRS or UK GAAP
  • Possess the ability to perform cashflow forecasts or investment appraisals (such as discounted cashflow)

It would be beneficial if you also have:

  • Knowledge and use of the finance and operations module - Microsoft Dynamics
  • Knowledge of working in the transport industry or public sector
